Interview with Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips from Luna

Luna, the dreamy indie pop band, has reunited for a world tour that will bring them to the Barby Tel Aviv on 5.8 together with Cheval Sombre. I emailed band members/power couple Dean Wareham (left most in the pic) and Britta Phillips and asked them what it's like to get on stage again after 10 years, what they remember from supporting The Velvet Underground, and how they keep their relationship together while being in a band.

What was it like to step on stage again for the first time in 10 years at the first Luna reunion show at The Echo in LA?

Dean: It was strange. There was a lot of build-up to this one show, the tickets sold out online in 17 minutes and fans came from all over the country. But we played well, considering it was our first show in ten years. Now that we have done a tour of Spain, we are playing even better. I feel that after a week on the road it all starts to click.

Britta: I was nervous and excited. It's really a reunion with the fans as much as with each other.

Where is the band today versus the Luna of 2005?

Dean: There is a much better mood in the van. When the band was ending, in 2005, there were all kinds of built-up resentments - we were tired of each other. But after ten years away, we were able to become friends again. And at this point we realize - we are doing these live dates because it’s fun. No one is forcing us to be there.

Britta: We’ve all gone back and listened to the records - which you just don’t do when you’re touring all the time - so tempos are a bit slower and I think we’re playing more dynamically now. The last tour was very emotional, but kinda sad. Now, there’s nothing to be sad about. It’s just really fun.

The band was described by Rolling Stone magazine as “the best band you’ve never heard of”. What do you think about this statement?

Dean: I think they find a new band for that description every year or two, but at that time (1996) it was us. I remember our manager copied that review and sent it to everyone at the record company. What can I say, yeah I think Luna were a great band, both in studio and on record. It’s not like we were unknown - our albums would sell about 100,000 copies in the US - but we were not rock stars.

This tour takes you to Spain, Portugal, the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. What made you decide to also come all the way to Tel Aviv?

Dean: When we have an opportunity to go somewhere we’ve never been - so long as we trust the promoter, and we won’t lose money - then we try to do it. Our promoter has been trying to get me to Tel Aviv for some years now, and in fact I was supposed to be there last year, but a horrible war ruined those plans.

Britta: People always ask “Why don’t you come to “insert city, country HERE””, and I always tell them, we’d LOVE to, but we have to be invited first - like vampires.

Luna supported the Velvet Underground in 1993. What do you recall about that support tour?

Dean: I remember getting the phone call from our manager, saying that Lou Reed had requested us to open for the re-formed Velvet Underground. I thought it was a joke, it had never occurred to me that such a thing could happen. But it was a great experience, I got to watch the Velvet Underground perform - up close - for two weeks. And they seemed to get along just fine, but then they broke up again when the tour ended.

Dean mentioned in an interview for Farewell Happy Days that playing together in a band is easy, but keeping the band is difficult. Could you please give some advice to younger bands how to keep it together?

Dean: Bands are inherently unstable, it is a collection of people and life can pull each person in a different direction. So every band is going to break up sooner or later (except huge bands like U2 or Metallica or the Rolling Stones, but those are more corporations than bands). I think the hardest part is putting a band together in the first place, and then hopefully you are lucky and create something interesting together and you find an audience for it.

Britta: Don’t feel like you have to chime in with your two cents about every little thing. Know your strengths and your weaknesses. Be comfortable not being the lead singer. Don’t take everything personally. Find validation in doing your best work.

How do you handle the stress of being married and in bands? Would you recommend it to other musical couples out there?

Britta: I really enjoy going off and sharing an adventure with Dean. It can be tiring and tedious but it's more stressful for Dean because he’s often tour managing and I’m often losing things. My advice is: 1. Be proud of your mate when they get attention. 2. Don’t take stress moods personally 3. Apologize and forgive. 4. Take care of your own needs and share the drudge work. It totally depends on the couple, though. I was married in a band before I met Dean and it was a nightmare.

What do you plan to do with Luna after these shows are over?

Dean: we need to have a band meeting about that! We have not discussed it, we’re really waiting to see how things go. My feeling is I don’t want Luna to become my whole life again, that part of my life is behind me, but I’d be happy to play shows now and then.

Would you like to add anything else?

Britta: Just that I’m very excited to play Tel Aviv and meet people who like Luna there. Plus, we're staying a few extra days after the show so I’m really looking forward to that mini-vacation.
