  • Japan And I ישתלטו על העולם // Japan And I Will Take Over The World

Die Antwoord.

Johnny Clegg.

זה ארגון דרום אפריקאי: International Music Exchange Export of South Africa.

Japan And I ישתלטו על העולם!

I was really impressed at Primavera by three girls who walked around the conference in matching outfits and lots of energy - kind of like the Power Puff Girls. Turns out they're the power trio Japan And I, a part of the South African team that was sent to Primavera and went on to perform in the festival. Feeling spontaneous, I did a quick interview with the band (Andy - drums + vocals, Angela - guitar + vocals, Dee Dee - bass guitar + vocals) to find out what's the indie scene like in Johannesburg, the genius plan behind their band, and why we should see them live (apologies for the delay in posting this).

So you're from South Africa and usually we don't hear about South African bands except one: Die Antwoord.

We were just speaking about that! Or Johnny Clegg.

Where in South Africa are you from?

    Johannesburg.

What's the music scene like there?

It's small. Bands help each other out. And there's not a hell of a lot of opportunity, I would say, for our alternative genre.

Alternative? Is that how you define your music?

I mean, like underground. Our music, I would say, is like a mixture of rock’n’roll, or punk-ska... A little bit of everything. Jazzy, swingy. There's like these little scenes in Jo’burg but none of them are very big for, you know, rock music. So you end up making friends, obviously, with other bands. We're very good friends with pretty much every band in South Africa! And everyone really helps each other out as far as they can. So, if someone from Cape Town is playing in Jo’burg we'll help them organize a show, maybe they'll stay at our place for the night and same if we go down there. Everyone kind of knows everyone.

It sounds like a punk DIY kind of mentality.

    Yeah, exactly!

Cool. So how did you guys get together and form your band?

We actually went to school together, the same high school. We wanted to get into shows for free, we were tired of paying entrance. We were underage, and we sometimes wouldn't get in because they would check our IDs. So, we were like, well, let's play in a band, because then they have to let us in! Genius plan. It worked! It brought us all the way to Barcelona!

So this trip is entirely paid for by someone?

Not a 100%, but very close to it. Kindly sponsored by IMEXSA. It's a South African organization: International Music Exchange Export of South Africa. It's actually funded by the Department of Arts and Cultures in South Africa, it's actually the Department of Creative Industry.

It's a very long name, so I think if I'm going to Google that there will be one result.

*Laughing* “Did you mean...” They brought out a few of us from South Africa and other delegates who are representing their bands. So they brought other people who are not playing, but are here to connect with other people, promote their bands and stuff. Actually, band-wise, it depends what you call a band. Because for us at home when we call the band a band, it's like there's guitar and a bass and the drums and the mic. But I've seen people call bands if it's an electro...like a group of people.

Like The Prodigy, they're a band.

    But they have drums!

Now they do, but in the beginning they didn't. Now they have a live outfit, but at first it was a guy with his synthesizers.

So it's something different for me because when we came here, there's two bands, us and another band, but other than that DJs and singers.

What are you hoping to get out of coming to this festival?

    Anything we can. *Laughing*

More entrances to shows and booz!

No… We really want to come back. I think we don't want this to be a once off - yeah, we did it once - we're really really hoping to meet people that like us and will invite us to other festivals, and just shows, like independant shows, anywhere in Europe or America...Israel! We've been trying to penetrate the world! Something that's outside of our boundaries of South Africa. This trip, it's amazing for us to come here. If we can go anywhere else, it would be amazing. So if we can make connections to people that, maybe like our music, and maybe wanna have it somewhere else, that would be... Or anybody that wants to help us out in whatever markets or whatever, that would be wonderful.

You can always pay them to help out.

We're a struggling band, we would never be able to come here by ourselves, that's why we haven't before. But it's also South Africa, very very few artists can just be artists, you have to have a job.

So what do you have to do to make guitars meet?

I (Andy) freelance photography when I can. She (Angela) does singing for adverts.

Yeah, I (Angela) did a lot of singing work, yeah. I play in another band at home as well. I got a few things. So yeah. We make ways to make money.

We kind of make financials to keep it going, we don't really make money to take home and enjoy our cut of the profits. The money we make we keep it in the band. If we go on tour, we use the money that we've made, so we don't really take the money.

How long has your band been together?

    About 9 or 10 years.

Oh wow, that's quite a while!

We started when we were very young, we were 17, so, yeah.

Maybe just last question: why should people come to your show at Primavera?

It's a lot of fun. Yeah, I think we bring a different sound.

Everybody says they’re different. What's different about you?

I think we use like a lot of genres and our music kind of does weird things with kind of surprise you I think. Like we will go one way and like, no, we're going that way, so I guess that surprises people. I guess ‘cause we're girls, and we rock the fuck out!

Yeah, there's gonna be a bunch of other girls who do that, Sleater Kinney and Babes in Toyland and Kathleen Hanna's band. Are you into the whole Riot Grrrl movement?

Personally, no. There's not a lot of girl bands in South Africa, there's like two maybe: us and another band

You're leading the Riot Grrrl scene in South Africa!

Yeah, so we haven't really seen other girl bands, so I'm pretty excited to see them. But at the end of the day we are here on business, so hopefully we will find time to actually watch a lot other bands. I'd dig to see Babes in Toyland cause they're old school.

    Anything you'd like to add?

Japan And I will take over the world! We have a new album we just released before we came here.

Cheatahs Primavera Interview on their Second Album

    Please scroll down for English

    cheatahs nathan hewitt primavera

Hipsters from around the globe came down to the Primavera Sound Festival to see headliners like The Black Keys or Alt J. But not me. I came to see the small-huge bands that I've been admiring through countless hours of headphones on my iPhone, bands like Viet Cong, HEALTH, and Cheatahs. I picked Cheatahs debut album as my favorite record of 2014, and I had to see how their guitars rip on stage.

Cheatahs went on in the late afternoon on the Adidas Originals stage right next to the beach, a perfect time and place for floating. I was so happy to meet a local couple who also came down to see Cheatahs and couldn't stop moving during the show. I stood up front and gave myself away to the music.

The next day I met with the band's lead singer Nathan Hewitt outside the Ray-Ban tent stage while some local band tore it apart - Cheatahs were up next. He invited me backstage where I also met drummer Marc Rue and bass player Dean Reid. Nathan got a beer out of the cooler and I sat down with him and Marc to ask some questions. We talked about the band's second album (exclusive!), their new songwriting techniques, and why they should publish their lyrics online.

(Top photo, left to right: Dean, James, Nathan, Marc, and I)

So, is it your first time in Spain?

Marc: "No, we've been here two years ago. We played the Primavera festival inside of the Apollo venue."

Nathan: "On the Wednesday, like, so it's our first time playing this stage on the grounds. It was like a pre-party which happens on the Wednesday. And we played in Barcelona another time as well, on tour."

Marc: "Yeah. So we've been here a few times, yeah."

Alright, and I heard that you played some new songs yesterday.

Nathan: "Yeah, all of it’s quite new now. We're only playing three old ones right now, three or four.

Yeah, you left out some hits like "The Swan" and "Get Tight" in favor of the newer material, which is more experimental.

Marc: "Yeah, we kind of tired to progress away a little bit from that, I guess shoegazy sound, and try to conquer new territories with the sounds."

"Murasaki" sounds totally different, there's some psychedelia there. I always try to figure out how you make these guitar sounds, cause I'm also a guitar player. So I was listening to "Murasaki" and I was like: how do they do it? So then I saw you use a synthesizer.

Nathan: "Yeah. It was actually a sample, but it was from a synth that Marc recorded ages ago, and he doesn't have that synth anymore, so we just sampled that tone once we recorded it. Which is actually kind of the way that we're writing now, it's more from taking samples or old parts and stuff and kind of writing a song around that instead of using a guitar and coming up with a chord progression, and then basing that around like a specific tone or a specific sample and incorporating that into the band. That's kind of where we're at now.”

So there's going to be a Cheatahs electronic album like the Smashing Pumpkins "Adore"?

    Both: *Laughing*

Nathan: "No no. We're definitely from that head space, just manipulating sounds and then writing a proper song on top of it, you know what I mean? Traditionally a song."

Last time I interviewed you over email that was before your debut album. That was out ages ago and you have two new EPs. How differently do you feel from back then to now in terms of where the band is at and where you wanna go?

Marc: "Again, we're writing songs completely differently. We're starting with different elements. We're starting the songwriting from music like synths or like samples or something. I guess that's different."

Nathan: "Yeah, now we've had time to tour, and actually just be a band that tours, and then kind of go, OK, well, that was fun. What can we do that's more exciting to us now? Because we record everything ourselves, we got this great thing going where we kinda just try shit out as much as we can and then see what works and record together, and more kind of pasting. But also, you know, obviously try to have like a song written, it's gotta be a song. We have freedom to do that I guess now that we're a band, like a proper band, and all four of us are writing equal parts and singing different parts."

There was one song that James sang solo where you (Nathan -IS) didn't sing.

Nathan: "The album, which we kind of recorded now, basically handed in, like the next record.

    Oh, it's finished!

Nathan: "Handed that in. So then hopefully you'll see. I think it will make more sense once that record is out, what the EPs were doing from the original one. It was kind of let's find ourselves a little bit. Let's just put as much shit out as we can, because, you know, it's hard being a touring band as well. Might as well just put as much stuff out. It will make more sense I think when the record comes out."

Marc: "We had this kind of privilege: I live in this old office building, and we kind of set up a studio there, and it gave us a really nice opportunity to like try stuff out over and over again. So it was less playing together as a band and coming up with songs for the new record, it was much more working on specific parts which are not from the guitar, putting it together, afterwards."

Nathan: "We didn't have that pressure to pay for studio time and all that stuff, so that we could actually just properly create and then record it."

Marc: "Exactly, yeah. So we spent quite a lot of time with it all, yeah."

Do you think that the music is being heard, that the fanbase is growing? Do you still have day jobs?

    Both: "Yeah, yeah."

Nathan: "We still do. But it definitely feels like now we can play shows, like yesterday, and there's an audience, which is fantastic. So hopefully, yeah, they'll stick with us when we just try keep doing different things."

    cheatahs primavera

I've been having a hard time trying to find Cheatahs lyrics online or deciphering them for myself. Is that intentional that they're not out there?

Nathan: "No, I think we probably should post them soon. The next record will include the lyrics. 'Cause we do actually work really hard on the words, and they do mean a lot, and they're more abstract. So, yeah, we should do that."

Yeah, I remember reading the track by track for the debut album which explained what the songs were about.

Nathan: "I'd say we put as much work into the words that we do to music as well. So we probably should."

What kind of things have you been influencing you lately in terms of the lyrics?

Nathan: "I mean, James writes lyrics, I write lyrics, Dean's written lyrics."

Marc: No lyrics? In German, maybe?

Marc: "There is a little on the record!"

Nathan: "So whoever kind of brings in the lyrics, that's kind of their stamp on the song, so it's very different. It's hard to say what they're all about, because they're all kind of about different things. Whoever is the songwriter, that's their song."

You know the cliche that you had your entire life to write the first album, and then you had a year to write the second one?

Nathan: "And this is the thing: we didn't have our entire lives to write the first album, but we've had way more time to write the second one. The second one almost feels like it's our first one as a proper band. Because things happened so quickly with the first one. That's what it was, we didn't have time to come up with it. And now, it's like we've had time, and in a sense it feels like the next one is like our first."

Marc: "We've definitely grown much more together as a band in this process between these two records. It all felt really fresh when we recorded the first record, and this feels much more together now, much more us, where we are standing right now and how we're feeling right now and what the music is like.”

How do you feel about playing festivals versus playing small venues? Where do you feel more at home?

Nathan: "I used to not like festivals so much, and preferred own shows, but when festivals go good, it's kind of the best. We've had a really good time so far. But then your own shows are great, because then you know all the people there, obviously, it's your show, and you can kind of communicate with them. With festivals, in the beginning it was tough, because you're like you should try and establish yourself, but you're not sure if anybody really gives a shit or just waiting around. They're different. They can be both really fun."

I guess you never know, because someone may be standing way at the back, and be like: Oh, what's this? I'll check it out.

    Both: *Laughing*

Nathan: "Yeah. And obviously the label will always be like: no, festivals are good, because there's a lot of people around. But it was fun to play our own shows because you know that they wanna be there."

Marc: "You reach such a bigger audience obviously playing festivals and you introduce more people to the band, so that's great."

What kind of guitar tricks or sounds have you been honing recently?

Nathan: "Do you know what? Guitars, it's mainly been in the production of it. I kind of get back to the sampling. To be honest, the guitars, especially on our new record, are more just like a nice pure tone. In a sense I've gone to strip back less pedals as well. Just got like a really nice amp tone. It's direct. Just put on reverb, whatever. And I feel like we're going to try and make more interesting with other sounds instead of guitars. The rest obviously is quite wet and like weirded guitars and stuff. I'd say more the weirder, other worldly things are coming from different places, like our voices, recording that, and then manipulating that afterwards or whatever. Just use what you can, it doesn't matter."

So we're going to start seeing laptops on stage and synthesizers and pads.

Nathan: "There will be something happening. But the shit will all be kind of, not just out of keyboards, I mean, loops or samples textures, fucking iPhone thing. It sounds cool! We mix that in the guitar. Just using multiple media, different ways."

Anything else you would like to add?

Nathan: "Yes. The biggest thing is that we have another record coming out and that it'll come out this year. We don't have an exact date, but it will be like October-November. So hopefully, after that we'll just tour as much as we possibly can. Can't wait for it. We handed it in!"

    Big relief, huh?

    Both: "Yeah."
