בשביל מתקפת רוק קטלנית צריך 4 אנשים ומעלה, מינימום 3, אבל RB עושים את זה רק עם 2: הבאסיסט/סולן Micheal Kerr והמתופף Ben Thatcher, שניהם מברייטון באנגליה. הריפים המלודיים-מלוכלכים של הבס בשילוב התופים העצומים והקול הגבוה שעוקץ מעל מתחברים לסימפוניות רוק הדוקות שמחזירות את ההאדבנגינג לאופנה וזורקות את ההיפסטרים הניהיליסטים לפוגו. ראיינתי את בן ביום שלישי, יום אחרי הופעה מיוחדת.
ממש עכשיו הופעתם בפעם הראשונה בלונדון. איך הקהל הגיב? קרה משהו יוצא מן הכלל?
"כן, זה היה מעולה. האולם היה מלא והיה באזז אמיתי. לא יכלנו לחכות לעלות לבמה ולנגן. זה התפוצץ שם. ההיילייט בשבילי היה כשהקהל שר ביחד איתנו את 'Out Of The Black'".
העפתם אותי כשגיליתי שאתם רק צמד שמנגן על תופים ובס, הייתי יכול להשבע שיש שם גיטרה חשמלית. איך אתם יוצרים סאונד כזה מאסיבי?
"תודה רבה. מה שאתה רואה זה מה שאתה מקבל אצלנו. אין גיטרות חשמליות, טראקים לליווי, ואין טריגרים, רק הרבה מגברים, גיטרה בס ותופים שמוגברים ל-11".
Royal Blood הוכתרה כלהקת השבוע ב-NME, נוגנה בתוכנית של Zane Lowe ב-BBC1, בתוכנית "The Selector", ועוד. איך זה מרגיש לקבל כל כך הרבה תשומת לב רק שנה מאז שהקמתם את הלהקה?
"זה משוגע לגמרי. התמיכה שקיבלנו מ-NME ו-Radio 1 ו-XFM מדהימה. אם היית אומר לנו בתחילת השנה שכל זה עומד לקרות, אין לי מושג מה היינו חושבים. אנחנו אוהבים לנגן מוזיקה ולשתף אותה עם האנשים שאנחנו אוהבים. זה החלום".
משווים את המוזיקה שלכם ל-White Stripes וה-Black Keys בעוד שאני שומע חיבור ל-Muse מתקופת "Origin of Symmetry"/"Absolution". מה ההשפעות שלכם בפועל?
"אנחנו מושפעים מכל הנ"ל. אנחנו אוהבים את רוב הפרויקטים שג'ק ווייט מעורב בהם. The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, וכו'. הסיבה שמשווים אותנו הרבה לווייט סטרייפס היא בגלל שאנחנו צמד. שנינו אוהבים את Queens Of The Stone Age, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Nirvana ואני חושב שאפשר לשמוע את זה במוזיקה שלנו".
המתופף של הארקטיק מאנקיז, Matt Helders, לבש את חולצת הלהקה שלכם, אז איזה חולצות של להקות אתם לובשים?
"שאלה טובה. מייק (הבאסיסט/סולן) בטח היה לובש את חולצת המאריה קארי שלו. ואני חושב שהייתי הולך עם סלין דיון או P. Diddy".
I had an epiphany this week - I don't need to wait for bands to perform in Israel in order to interview them. Thanks to the magic of the Internets, I can do it now. Gathering some huzpa, I sent a Facebook message to a new band that's on the express elevator all the way up to the penthouse, a band that puts the "RRRRR" back into rock - Royal Blood.
A lethal rock attack usually needs four people or above. Sometimes three suffice. But Royal Blood, operating out of Brighton England, manage it with just two: Michael Kerr on bass/vocals and Ben Thatcher on drums. Their dirty-melodic bass riffs, combined with gigantic drums and the high pitched vocal sting, form tight rock symphonies that put headbanging back in style and shove nihilistic hipsters into the pit. I was lucky to interview Ben on Tuesday, the morning after a special gig.
You just had your first show in London. How did the crowd react? Did anything extraordinary happen?
"Yeah, It was great. the room was packed and there was a real buzz. We couldn't wait to get on and the stage and play. It went off in there. Highlight for me was having the crowd singing along when we played 'Out Of The Black'".
I was blown away when I found out that you’re a only duo playing drums & bass, could have sworn there's an electric guitar in there. How do you create such a massive sound?
"Thank you very much. What you see is what you get with us. There are no electric guitars, no backing tracks, no triggers, just a lot of amps, a bass guitar and a drums all turned up to 11".
Royal Blood was named NME band of the week, played at Zane Lowe’s show on BBC1, on “The Selector”, etc. What’s it like to get so much attention only 1 year since starting the band?
"It's been absolutely crazy. The support we have had from NME & Radio1 and XFM has been amazing. If you told us that all this was going to happen at the beginning of the year..... I have no idea what we would have thought. We love playing music and sharing it with people that also love it. It's the dream".
Your music is being compared to White Stripes and Black Keys while I hear a Muse “Origin of Symmetry”/”Absolution” era connection. What are your actual influences?
"We are influenced by all of the above. We are into most projects Jack White is involved in. The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather etc. The reason we get compared to White Stripes the most is because they are a two piece. We both love Queens Of The Stone Age, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Nirvana which I think all have hints in our music".
Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders sported your band t-shirt, so which band t-shirts do you sport?
"Good question. Mike (The bassist/singer) would probably wear his Mariah Carey t-shirt. And I think I would go with Celine Dion or P.Diddy".
