הראיון עם Royal Blood נתן לי טעם של עוד. יצרתי מיד קשר עם Cheatahs, להקת הרוק החדשה האהובה עלי. כבר מזמן לא התרגשתי ככה לגבי להקה, אולי מאז Oceansize. יש משהו בצ'יטאז שלוחץ לי על הכפתורים הנכונים, הגיטרות המפותלות האלה שמשתלבות עם חטיבת קצב מיליטנטית וסולן רגיש. זה השיט, בהייה בנעליים שרוקעות חזק על הרצפה.
התמיילתי עם Nathan Hewitt, סולן וגיטריסט הלהקה, כשהם טסים במהירות האור עם הופעות בשני צידי האוקיינוס האטלנטי ולקראת אלבום בכורה שיצא בפברואר.
איך הטור האירופאי שלכם? קרה משהו מטורף?
"הטור מעולה. Metz הם החברים הכי מפנקים לטור. מאוד שמח לנסוע עם קנדיים. היה לנו בילוי קריוקי-טסטי בברלין, Hayden (מתופף Metz -ע.ש.) ביצע גרסה שוברת לבבות ל-"Pancho and Lefty" כשרובינו צרחנו כל הדרך עם ACDC".
אני מאוד אוהב את החזרה שלכם לרוק. למה אתה חושב שמוזיקת גיטרות לא טרנדית בשנים האחרונות?
"אני לא יודע. אני לא יודע מה הטרנד כרגע בכנות? אני מרגיש שעדיין יש מלא להקות שעושות מוזיקה עם גיטרות, אתה פשוט צריך לדעת איפה לחפש ולחפור קצת יותר לעומק, מה שהרבה יותר כיף מאשר שידחפו לך את זה בכוח לתוך הגרון".
יש בשירים שלכם המון ריפים חכמים והוקים קליטים. איך אתם יוצרים אותם?
"תודה! ובכן, אנחנו מנגנים שעות על גבי שעות ואם משהו צץ אנחנו משתדלים להקליט אותו כדי שלא נשכח! אחרי זה בדרך כלל נחזור ונקשיב לדמואים במשך ימים ונמשיך משם. הרבה מהריפים נכתבו על גיטרה אקוסטית מה שקצת מוזר, אבל אני מאמין שאם אתה גורם למשהו להשמע מגניב בלי פאז, אז זה הרבה יותר מאתגר וכיפי כשאתה סוף כל סוף מוסיף אותו באולפן".
איך אתם עובדים על הצליל שלכם, במיוחד הגיטרות?
"יש לנו כל מיני אפקטים שאנחנו מזיזים כל הזמן ומשחקים איתם. זה מטורף איך הם יכולים להשמע אחרת דרך מגברים שונים, פיקאפים, שרשור, וכו'. זה תמיד יהיה סוג של ניסוי באולפן. ניסינו גם לחבר שתי גיטרות לאחד מהמגברים שלנו וממש להעמיס עליו, זה נתן לנו סאונד ממש מפוצץ שלגמרי התאים לתפקיד".
מה אנחנו יכולים לצפות לקראת אלבום הבכורה שיצא בקרוב?
"ובכן יהיו סך הכל 12 שירים. המון מלודיה ופאז. מקווה שאנשים יאהבו אותו!"
Interviewing Royal Blood gave me a taste for more. I immediately contacted Cheatahs, my favorite new rock band. I haven't been this excited about a band in ages, maybe since Oceansize. There's something about Cheatahs that moves me the right way, those warped guitars intertwined with a militant rhythm section and sensitive vocals. That's the shit, gazing at shoes stomping hard on the floor.
I emailed Nathan Hewitt, vocals/guitar, while the band was traveling at light speed with shows set across both sides of the Atlantic and their debut album about to be released in February.
How’s your current European tour going? Have there been any crazy incidents?
"Tour is going great. Metz are the most accommodating tour mates. Very happy to be traveling with Canadians. We had a pretty karaoke-tastic time in Berlin, Hayden did an absolutely heartbreaking rendition of "Pancho and Leftט" while most of us screamed our way through ACDC".
I really like your return to rock. Why do you think guitar music has been a bit out of trend in the last few years?
"I don't know. I don't really know what's on trend right now to be honest? I feel like there are still tons of bands making music with guitars, you just have to know where to look and dig a little deeper, which is way funner than getting it shoved down your throat".
Your songs have a lot of smart riffs and catchy hooks. How do you come up with them?
"Thanks! Well, we just play for hours and hours and if anything pops up we try and record it so we don't forget it! Then usually we'll get to listen back to demos for days and work from there. A lot of the riffs were written on acoustic which is kind of weird, but also I believe if you can make something sound cool without fuzz, then it's much more challenging and fun when you finally get to add it in the studio".
How do you work on your sound, especially the guitars?
"We've got a bunch of pedals that we are constantly moving around and playing with. It's pretty crazy how different they can sound through certain amps, pick-ups, chains etc. It's always going to be a bit of an experiment in the studio. We also tried plugging in two guitars into one of our amps and really overloading it, that gave it this really blown out sound that totally suited the part".
What can we expect from the up and coming debut album?
"Well there are 12 songs total. Lots of melody and fuzz. Hopefully people will like it!"
